Indore Municipal Corporation to be the first urban body to get EPR credit
Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) in Madhya Pradesh, India, has made history by becoming the first urban body in the country to receive Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) credit for recycling banned single-use plastic items. Indore has implemented a complete ban on single-use plastic items within the city.

In recent times, the IMC seized approximately eight tonnes of such plastic, preventing its circulation. Moreover, Indore has also been recognized as India’s cleanest city for the sixth consecutive year in the central government’s annual cleanliness survey.

Bihar Surpasses Tamil Nadu as State with Highest Microlending Borrowings
Bihar has overtaken Tamil Nadu to become the state with the highest microlending borrowings in India as of March 2023, according to a report released. Bihar’s rise to the top was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Kerala.The report, published by credit information company Crif High Mark, highlighted Bihar’s impressive growth with a 13.5 percent increase in the gross lending portfolio during the March quarter compared to the previous quarter.

As of March 2023, Bihar’s microfinance (MFI) borrowings amounted to Rs 48,900 crore, accounting for 14.5 percent of the overall portfolio. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s MFI borrowings stood at Rs 46,300 crore, representing 13.7 percent of the total outstanding.
The overall MFI portfolio outstanding witnessed substantial growth, reaching Rs 3.37 lakh crore by the end of March, reflecting a 17.9 percent increase. The report also highlighted an improvement in asset quality. The proportion of MFI loans overdue for over 90 days decreased to 1.1 percent in March 2023, compared to 2 percent in December 2022.

India handed over torch of Startup 20 to Brazil
Startup20 Shikhar Summit, which was put on by the Startup20 Engagement Group for the India G20 Presidency, came to a successful conclusion in Gurugram.

This two-day summit served as a platform for fostering innovations, collaborations, knowledge sharing, and strategic alliances within the global startup ecosystem.
During the closing ceremony, the Chair of Startup20, Chintan Vaishnav, officially handed over the torch to Brazil, as the country has G20 presidency for the next year and has committed to continue the Startup20 initiative in 2024.

Iceland is the No. 1 most peaceful country in the world
As per the 2023 GIP, Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world – a title it has held since 2008. It is accompanied at the top by Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria. Conversely, Afghanistan is the least peaceful country in the world for the eighth consecutive year.It is followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI) recently released its annual ranking of the most peaceful countries in the world. Put out by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the 17th edition of the GPI ranked 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.
The GPI covers 163 countries comprising 99.7 per cent of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources.

World Investment Report 2023: FDI in developing Asia remains flat at $662 Billion in 2022
The UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2023 reveals that foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to developing Asia remained unchanged at $662 billion in 2022 compared to the previous year. However, the report highlights significant variations among countries in the region.

FDI inflows to developing Asia were highly concentrated, with five economies accounting for nearly 80% of the total investment. These economies are India, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates.
The report also highlighted a global decline in FDI, with a 12% drop to $1.3 trillion in 2022. However, it is worth noting that the decline followed a strong rebound in 2021 after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. China was an exception to this decline, as it experienced a 5% increase in FDI.

FPSB India appoints Krishan Mishra as CEO
The Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) of India has appointed Krishan Mishra as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 1 August 2023.

FPSB India is the Indian subsidiary of FPSB, the global standards-setting body for the financial planning profession and owner of the international Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification program.
In his new role, Mishra will lead the strategy and operations of FPSB India and champion the advancement of the financial planning profession in India.

Dr Neeraja Prabhakar appointed to Oilpam RAC, Pedavegi
Neeraja Prabhakar, the Vice-Chancellor of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University, has been appointed as the chairperson of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) for the ICAR-Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research (IIOPR) in Pedavegi, Andhra Pradesh.

Ms. Prabhakar’s appointment as RAC chairperson is effective from June 13 and she will lead a committee of ten members for a duration of three years.
In addition, Ms. Prabhakar serves as a member of the Telangana Oil Palm Advisory Committee, which advises the State government on matters such as expanding the area dedicated to oil palm cultivation, addressing issues related to oil palm farming, and supporting the oil palm processing industry.

King Charles III presented with Scottish Crown Jewels
In a significant ceremony at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, King Charles III of the United Kingdom was presented with the Scottish Crown Jewels, solidifying his authority in Scotland. The event took place two months after his official coronation and included the unveiling of a new sword named after the late Queen Elizabeth.

The Scottish Crown Jewels, also known as the Honours of Scotland, consist of a crown, sword of state, and sceptre, which are integral symbols of the monarch’s authority in Scotland.
Presented to King Charles III by the Very Reverend Prof David Fergusson, Dean of the Chapel Royal and Dean of the Order of the Thistle, these regalia represent the enduring connection between the British monarchy and Scotland.

Meta launches “Threads” Twitter killer app
Meta, the owner of Instagram, has introduced a new social media platform called Threads. With Twitter facing instability under its billionaire owner Elon Musk, Meta aims to capitalize on the situation.

Threads is now accessible in more than 100 countries through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Like Twitter, users can share brief text messages that can be liked, reposted, and responded to.
However, Threads does not include direct messaging features. Users can create posts on Threads with up to 500 characters, as well as share links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length.
